Method, Commissions, Artist's Commitment, Matting & Framing
Method: The portraits, which usually start with your photographs or mine, capture the subject's likeness and spirit without
the inconvenience of a live sitting. All portraits are drawn completely by hand in Prismacolor (artists' wax and clay based
pencils) on museum-quality archival Strathmore Bristol paper -- they will last as well as oil paintings. My works are without
any computer-generated/digital effects whatsoever. I create complete scenes with people and/or animals in habitats or
environments (whether inside or outdoors); I don't create vignettes (images that fade out towards the edges or borders). I
can also combine more than one photograph in a piece if their focus and lighting are similar. If your photograph is of
excellent quality, or you would like for me to create the photograph that I will work from, and you are interested in a finely
detailed and highly realistic work, one can be yours. If you are located within the Houston, Austin, or San Antonio
metropolitan areas (or are otherwise within a hundred miles of me), we can arrange a viewing of several of my original
portraits.
Commissioning a Portrait: After we agree on photograph(s), concept, portrait cost, and delivery date, a 33% deposit is
required (by check or major credit card). Nothing more is required of you until the work is completed. The portrait is
actively commissioned when your deposit arrives, reserving you a place in my work schedule.
Commitment: All finished portraits are subject to your approval. When the work is complete, I forward detailed electronic
files (photos or scans) of the finished work for you to examine. When you approve the electronic version, you remit the
remaining 66% of the commission. I then ship the artwork to you. If you are a local client (see Delivery below), the
remainder is due at delivery. Additionally, the following commitment is meant to give us both peace of mind: If you are not
completely satisfied with any detail of the work when it arrives, you may ship it back to me for a detail alteration -- for which
you will pay nothing. I will pay for the shipment to me and then back to you as well. This is to make the point that I am very
proud of my work and stand completely behind it.
Matting and framing: At the completion of a project, clients often ask for assistance (tips) in making matting and framing
choices. I keep digital photo files as examples which are provided free-of-charge and sent as e-mail attachments to my
long-distance clients at their request. Clients can print out these examples to take along when having their works
professionally framed. For local clients, I will assist personally with matting and framing tips free-of-charge at delivery.
Occasionally, clients will ask me to handle matting and framing completely in conjunction with the creation of their portraits;
this service is at client's expense.
Pricing, Delivery, & Inquiries
Pricing: Prices vary depending on the portrait's overall size and amount of detail. Prices are quoted on an individual
basis. The average range for my portraits is $900 to $2600. To give you a better idea about specific pricing, the
well-detailed full-color portrait on my home page, Leigh in Paris, is 20" x 16" and is a $1700 work. (Viewers can enlarge it
twice to full-page zoom or click here to view fine detail.)
Delivery: I will deliver the portrait to you personally, without delivery charge, if you live within the Houston, Austin, or San
Antonio metropolitan areas or are otherwise within a hundred mile radius of me. For greater distances, I will ship your
artwork, flat, fully padded, and fully insured, by UPS. Shipping, handling, and carrier insurance is approximately $75 and
will be added to the price of the portrait.
Inquiries: For general inquiries, particular questions, or specific requirements please write to the e-mail address below.
For a free quote, you have only to send me a digital file by e-mail or a photograph by mail.
